If your child (or even, you!) are just learning to knit, I highly recommend this technique.

It’s great because it is makes it easier to maintain an even tension, avoiding those insanely tight cast-ons which make the first row so hard to knit. It also gives the child the great satisfaction of knowing that once their cast-on is finished they’ve already completed the first row of their project!
